This year’s Rathbone Lecture welcomed Rt Hon Sir Vince Cable, former MP and leader of the Liberal Democrat Party, to the College. The lecture addressed the question ‘What’s Wrong with the UK Economy?’ prompting thoughtful discussion and debate which provided an opportunity to explore some key economic questions facing the UK today. Radley welcomed Sir Vince Cable – former Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and former Leader of the Liberal Democrats – for the annual Stephen Rathbone Lecture, which this year focalises on the challenges facing the British economy. Drawing on his prolific career featuring experience in both government and academia, Sir Vince offered boys an unusually perceptive lens on the underlying forces shaping Britain’s economic dynamics.
The lecture explored the structural weaknesses behind Britain’s recent economic challenges. Sir Vince placed the narrative within a wider historical context, analysing Britain’s continuous exposure to the influx of international relations and its defence against successive shockwaves over the past two decades. His discussion also placed strong emphasis on growth and the necessity of maintaining healthy public sector finances. Eventually, Sir Vince closed by setting out a calculated mixture of short and long term measures that he believes is instrumental for achieving sustained growth. An especially engaging feature of the evening was the breadth and depth of the discussion. Questions from the boys ranged well beyond the immediate state of the British economy and extended to how supply-side policies are conditioned in a liberal democracy, and even the feasibility of a land value tax. Sir Vince’s responses drew equally on his ministerial expertise and his long-standing interest in global affairs.
For boys with keen interest relevant fields, Sir Vince’s visit was a timely reminder that understanding Britain’s future requires gazing beyond the headlines to the deeper tides and currents that are reshaping the world. Following the lecture, Sir Vince continued the conversation with a group of students, who had the opportunity to explore these themes in further depth.
